Poleaxe simulators -
01-10-2005, 03:49 PM
Greetings!
I've completed the first of our Talhoffer Poleaxe Simulators. We were offering just the weapon-heads, but several folks convinced me to offer the complete kit and completed poleaxes. The thrusting heads will arrive near the end of February, so the whole shebang is available as components, in kit form or as a complete simulator.
With armour, you should be able to compete at something very like full speed. Of course, the combatant must still exercise judgment vis a vis their opponent's armour (don't smash the ash shaft down on an unprotected zone, for example), but the performance should be very good.
For unarmoued work, I think these offer a good balance between accurate weight and safety. The tip and head will compress, and if you want more compression, you could add foam to the hammer-face (say, 1/2" x 3/4") and hold it in place with black grip tape for a nearly invisible modification. During seminars and in class, I have my students work with gauntlets, helmets (or masks) and gambesons, going 1/2 or 3/4 speed, depending upon what is being done and the skill of the students. I do not think you can really spar with a poleaxe--even a rubber one--without armour, but you can work through the conceptual framework and plays before adding the multitude of variables presented by full harness.
We have more images posted, along with other notes on the Revival page:

Feedback welcome!

Hi Brian,
Those axe heads look great. So, I was wondering whether you intended on developing one in the "Bec du Corbin" style?

David,
This is as close as I feel comfortable getting with the bec-de-corbin; the hammer face is close to the Talhoffer original and the spike is actually quite narrow, although its a little hard to see in the picture.
The next polearm is a 15th century poleaxe, but we need to see a bit higher sales on the polehammer / bec product first.
There are more pics on the website above.

Brian, that's excellent! There's nothing like it out there by anyone else and I can't wait to own one. The pricing on the website, though is a little confusing. Can you clarify, and is there a difference in the Kit price versus the Complete?
Looks like exciting things going on there at Chivalry/ Revival. Keep up the good work!

Bob,
Yeah, I'm not happy with the pricing presentation, we'll probably rework it this afternoon.
KIT: You assemble the components youself; ie., stain the shaft, cut the rondel to fit, press the head and spikes into place.
COMPLETE: Or I'll do all that for $50.

David,
If you mean the really long Swiss bec, it will be a while, unless a bunch of folks write in and let me know they want them
Got to pay for tooling, which is rather expensive...

Poleweapon & spear tips available next week -
01-25-2005, 06:28 PM
We received word today that the tips are shipping by FedEx this week, so we will have them next week
It will take a couple of days for those of you who have ordered a completed weapon, but we have the ash staves already stained and ready, and fitted with the rondel. Just a bit to attach the head and dagues.
Let the poleaxe play begin!

Brian,
Looks promising. If I may ask, how would the head and tips be attached to the haft so that the head doesn't get pulled off when using it as a hook?

Its a press-fit, but it takes quite a bit of pressure to get it on--it WILL NOT come off, even hooking someone small and petite like you, David

I was planning on Jagermeister this weekend, a job fair took precedence.
Unless I win the lottery, Gulf Wars isn't happening.
I may be in basic training by then anyways.

Have you guys considered rondel dagger simulators that are similar to the poleax tips? Might be worth looking into.

I have not only considered it, I've already done the designs. But I need to sell some of the tips and axe-heads first
But yes, by summer, they will exist
