Hanwei Tsunami Katana!?!? -
02-14-2004, 11:09 AM
Hello all,
Went into town today and looked in a store that sell all sorts of stuff. They sometimes get some of the hanwei line in and sell it for around 30% more than you can get on the internet.
Today i saw a Hanwei Katana that i have never seen befor!
The Tsunami katana by Paul Chen?
I asked to hold it and what can i say, It was a beauty!
The Tsuka was roughly 11" and had a nice black Silk(I think) Wrap with some really impressive menuki!
The Fuchi, kashira and Tsuba where all Daimyo Kamon Motive and it all looked very nice!
The most impressive thing here was the blade!
It was roughly 28" maybe. It was a very thick blade and had a very long kissaki a bit like the one on the Kami Katana!
I held the sword expecting it to feel heavy and it felt very light and well balenced!
I have fallen in love with this peace but cannot find it ANYWHERE!?
I will not buy it from them as they overprice everything!
Oh well
Has anyone else seen or got this Katana?
Cheers

I don't think it's the nami iaito. Sounds like what you came upon is the Tsunami. I don't have that version, but I got more common cousin the wind and thunder. From what I understand it's just a wind and thunder with a different tsuba, though I wouldn't mind having it just that it costs way to much just for that. $800 bucks, yea right, I can get somewhere else for $500. Hanwei stuff is almost always highly overpriced; you just got to know where to go.

No offence but i know an Iaito from a Forged sword
I know the hanwei range very well and have held most of them.
It was nothing like the Nami either!
The blade was different from the Wind and thunder and IMO much nicer! I am a fan of big Kissaki but the one on the W&T is strangly shaped compared to the one on the Tsunami.
I really want this Katana now i have thought about it.
The blade on it was just so amazing!
The whole sword just had a really nice feel to it.

Good news Bingham.
Not only can you get this sword online, but you can get it from Barrington-swords.com, a UK company.

These people wouldn't have a website by any chance would they? Heck, I wouldn't by a PPK and Musashi; I would go strait for the throat and customize my new best friend even if they were a little expensive. Besides, you can't put a price on friendship that can last a lifetime. BTW, how much are they?

Hmm... I know only one Tsunami katana, the one that is made by Last Legend. Are you sure that they did not muddle up the manufacturer? HERE are some photos of LL Tsunami

No i think i know the difference between a Hanwei product and a last legend product! This is a hanwei model but is not obviously in production anymore or was a special edition like the wind and thunder.
I am suprised to how many people have seen this Katana its amazing!
Why customize a PPK when you can customise a better sword?
Well you could say the same for cars...."Why drive a skoda when you can drive a porshe?"
Money my friend.......Unfortunatly Its a big factor.

Just letting you know customizing a PPK is like upgrading a van why spend so much when for the same prices get a much better car.
Customizing the PPK will cost you at least $300 which would be to have the same laquered black then rewraping it. If you plan on going no holds you might aswell buy a bugei blade.

$300?
No i dont think so, I plan on doing it myself!
All i will be paying for is the spare parts!
I only plan on updating the Tsuba anyway. I quite like the Fuchi and Kashira on the new Gen 2 PPK so i will just whack a new Tsuba on there! so it will cost a total of around $30 to Customize

quite true, a home-done job is quite cheap. i personaly have this problem where i can't be satisfied with a production katana. have to customize.

The tsuba will cost you a minumum of $150 and you'll need a file, some patience and some metal shims along with a few seppa.

$150?
Dude where do you buy your stuff from?
Your either thinking im buying antique stuff or you pay way to much for your stuff. A paul chen Tsuba is no more than $40 and i am aware of all the equipment i will need.
Thank you

Same here. I wish Chen would add the one that's on the tsunami to the rest of his spare tsuba's, but I doubt that's gona happen anytime soon so if you don't mind doing a little filling and filing you can get one here Oh and you might want to add a little color.

tsuba -
02-20-2004, 02:17 AM
I think I'm going to design and make my own copper tsuba for my new ppk. Or should I make it out of silver, or sterling silver ? I dont know..... Copper is harder than silver though... and then gold plate it, or rhodium plate it ! oooh yeah.
