Forum member Don Rice badly injured -

I just got off the phone with forum member Don Rice and his lady Sherry.
Last week Don was doing his laido workout when he was re-scabbarding his
katana and missed- he ran the blade clear through his left forearm.
The blade ran against the bone, severed the main arteries and did alot of muscle damage.
Don said at least 6" of the blade had protruded out the other side of his arm.
He nearly bled out but they applied a belt around his arm until the rescue squad arrived.
He has had two major surgeries on his arm and its now in a cast-and will most likely remain so
for 3 months.
The doctors don't think there will be any nerve damage.
Don said he had a lapse of concentration and simply messed up.
Lets all hope for Don's speedy recovery!

Oh my God, that sounds horrible!!!
Let this be a reminder to us all how dangerous these things can be.
I really hope Don gets through this and makes a 100% recovery.

That sounds terrible. I have done the same thing only I was using a practice katana. Had I been using a live blade I would have lost a finger. Let's hope he recovers 100%. Amen.

Ouch, I hope he recovers with no permanent injury.
An accident like that can happen to anyone. So I think this story should serve as a reminder for all of us to be careful all the time. Swords are fun but they are also very dangerous.
It also points out the importance of having basic first aid supplies and the knowledge to use them whenever swords are being used. From the sound of things, that improvised tourniquet probably saved his life. Fortunately someone was around who knew what to do and they were able to keep their cool long enough to stop the bleeding.
Whenever there’s an accident or tragedy I always try to find some way to make something good come out of it. It may be a small consolation to Don Rice, but maybe this story will prevent an even worse injury in the future.

Ouch. Let's hope there is no nerve damage... can be nasty.
We should really figure out a way to impress the danger on newbs (make them read a thread when they register....?)... wonder why they still believe the only dangerous part on a sword is the tip (euro).... .
May he recover quickly.

Just a word to let everyone know that Don's very accomplished with using bladed weapons.
I've know him for over 2 decades and safety has always been the first issue with him.
He was using his LL Kat and it was razor sharp-which was a good thing according to the Doctors.
They said that if the edge had not been so sharp it would have made repairing the damage much
more harder. The blade was so sharp it made a very clean cut and didn't tear the tissue etc...
As I stated, Don said he lost concentration only for a second, a life altering second.

Don also makes some fine axes and polearms from time to time. As a fan of his works I am glad to hear there will not be any permanent damage.
I used to prepare and arm myself for the inevitable zombie attack.... then i realized I had become a coffee zombie myself.... cooofffeeee...cccooofffeee!!

Ooooof! That sent shivers all over my body. I hope he'll recover fully, and it just goes to show that these things can happen to anyone. Sharp things have a way of bringing you back to earth if they think you're being too confident.

I watched a 7th dan slice his finger open while performing nukitsuke while I was in Japan. Accidents happen and all it takes is a momentary slip of the concentration!
Here's hoping for the quickest possible and complete recovery for Don!

Don said they tried direct pressure to the wound but it kept bleeding out, very quickly. I think Don said he was going into
shock and told Sherry to take his belt off and make a tourniquet. I'm very glad she was there with him,
he would have made it without her.

I just talked with Don. He said that he or Sherry would try to post.
He sounded much better when we talked.
