New stuff on the Cas Iberia website! -
10-01-2006, 11:31 AM
This may be old news but if you check out the Cas website you'll see that the XL and XL light Ptactical plus and Musashi have been relesed. Also, looking under the chinese swords you'll notice that they have a new pu dao in addition to their old one.
They have a qi jian, a rattan yari and rattan butterfly swords (Old news.) I hope that they update their european stuff, maybe extend their "Practical" line. I really really want the roman stuff to get better or for them to release som middle eastern style swords too.

Paul Chen has really stepped forward now in producing some genuinely fascinating items. Especially this one, a solid, one piece blade. I've never owned a CHinese piece, but this may be my first if the price is right.
I find the smarter people tend ask more questions than sit in uninquisitive silence. Unless the question is "how is babby formed?".

Well then, damn Chen. That piece is pretty slick, though. If I weren't a broke college boy....(sighs).

Lol....damn chen then.
The only part im a little hesitant about is the pommel...but i guess i could live with it.... or *customise* it
im actually impressed. It looks quality... the scabbard even has a same wrap around the throat.
Hitting all the spots...
Awesome....

You'll have to live with it. The entire sword is one piece, so the pommel can't be removed...

i saw this sword in person at Blade Show in june........
its very nice looking, but the blade looks really highly polished and the blade is REBATED! oh yes!! duller than a butter knife, the folks in the CASI booth had no clue what kinda steel it was made of, but judging from how its made, id guess stainless...

So, anybody else want the line extended? -
10-03-2006, 06:28 PM
Out of curiosity, if you could have CAS iberia start a line of any type (I. e. Roman, middle eastern, extend their <Insert here>what would it be? I agree, the Qi jian is quite pretty but if it is stainless do you think Hanwei woul have taken the time to properly heat treat it? I understand that Stainless steel is forged at much higher temperatures or somethink of that ilk.

In answer to K Jenq I'd like to see them expand their katana range to something that wasnt shinogi-zukuri .Theres hundreds of years worth of Japanese swords to replicate rather than just keep doing the same stuff with different furniture. I suppose it comes down to demand tho.
oh and that Jian had my interest too untill I found out it wasnt live and possibly stainless, tho the Hsu corn-leaf sabre looks pretty tasty and is carbon steel and live I think

Well Hanwei also makes a shobu and a chokuto ("ninjato"). I'd like to see them expand onto the shinogi-zukuri range, Id est, o-kissaki, ko-kissaki. but having something like an u-no-kubi wouldn't be that bad either, or a kissaki moroha, but i'd really like to see a wider range of hamon styles, maybe letting people choose from a selection of different hamon on a certain sword.
Some more tachi would be interesting too, the ones that bugei sells haven't had many (if any) reviews.
If someone were to make a production efu-no-tachi it would be something i'd actually consider getting. (although i doubt i'd be able to afford it )

Aaron,
actually i was thinking of retexturing the pommel...not replacing it. I think it would be possible with papers, time and effort.

Hello David, Unfortunately I wasn't at the Blade Show so I'm not sure which prototype you handled (do you recall if the scabbard was rayskin or braided leather?), but I know the prototype we showed at the last sword show certainly wasn't sharp. On the prototype I have now (production version) the edge gradually tapers in thickness from the guard to about the middle of the blade, where it becomes reasonably (though not razor) sharp.
I'm getting information on the steel type for you.
The mouth in the hilt is actually a hole for attaching a tai chi style tassel (or whatever you like).
Hope that answers all the questions,
Blake

Personally I would like to see some more of the classical fencing swords they had up for a while. Some of the sabres were beautiful, and it would be nice to have some quality replicas around.
I do think the Qi Jian looks beautiful....

David,
The Qi Jian is indeed high-carbon, the equivalent of 1566 here in the states, treated to an HRC of 48~52. As far as functional it depends on your definition... it isn't a purpose-built cutter by any stretch, but should function quite well as a jian.
Thanks,
Blake

Wow...Hanwei's new stuff is looking pretty good - even the Practical line. I think I prefer the cotton ito over that synthetic suede/leather they used on the PK and PPK. I also like the look of the new folded kats, though I can't afford any of them right now...

I'm reallly happy that they are expanding their chinese weapons. There needs to be more quality/affordable chinese weapons out there. I hope to collect some more jians, and maybe those hook sword things.

I like the look of this sword. Last time I bought a jian, the fittings were terrible, and I've wanted to fix the problem for a while now.
As for the expanding, I am TOTALLY with paul on the tachi. There are really no tachi on the market today. I've been drooling over the bugeis for some time now, but can't afford either one. On my list though. Still I'd like to see more. Maybe something with kozuka ang kogai. WHY can't we find these on production blades.?? There are endless wall hangers with them. Other than that, I don't see a need to expand. Most other swords can be found elsewhere. I can't imagine trading my windlass shamshir for a hanwei. I have too many hanwei swords.
I bought a damascus viking a year ago, only to find out later it was a paul chen.
