huminahumina - Rick Barrett's "Longclaw" Almost Done! -

www.barrettcustomknives.com
This is the first full-shot of the 95% complete " Longclaw," Jon Snow's Valyrian steel bastard sword from A Song of Ice and Fire . If you haven't read it and you enjoy historical fiction or Tolkien's work, I cannot find a fitting superlative for the books. It is the best story (film, books, TV) I've ever experienced.
Just some detail work remains on the wolf head (garnets inset for the eyes, and some blackening/polishing work to bring out details in the "fur"). I don't know the full details yet, but it's intended as a hand and a half "bastard" sword, though it is described in the text as being 6" longer than a normal bastard sword, with which this sword agrees. Rick has told me that it weighs in a little under 4 pounds and has a point of balance about 6" off the guard.
Pattern welded, triple fuller, leather wrap handle, steel cast pommel... I'm drooling uncontrollably right now. I need to go get a towel. Enjoy -- I'll answer questions if I know the answers, I should have far more answers (and hands-on impressions) VERY soon.
Isn't Rick a genius? Give this guy business - he deserves it.

That is the spitting image of a sword design I have in my design folder... Well, very nearly, anyway... Just add a relief wolf head in the triagular area of the guard and add a downturned portion at the end of the guard.... and there it is...
Going to be a very nice piece when it is done...

Indeed, it already is a nice piece.

And if you are inclined tor read it, you might want to start with the original trilogy - Game of Thrones, Clash of Kings, and Storm of Swords
An yeah, that is a REALLY nice interpretation of Longclaw! I'd be partial to Ice myself!

A gorgeous weapon indeed. Looks very much like one of the Kit Rae designs I'd like to have seen converted from wall-hanger to functional.

Congratulations Ryan, and kudos to Rick for such a beautiful piece! I am curious, how did you decide to simulate the texture of Valyrian steel in this sword?

Thanks for the kind comments. I'm as excited (okay, well 300 times MORE excited) as you guys. I haven't even held it yet!
As for the Valyrian steel, it is generally conjectured that Martin was envisioning some kind of pattern-welding when he spoke of the Valyrian patterns being "swirled and dark as smoke," so Rick forged the blade from two different types of steel (one being 1086, if I'm not mistaken, it's been so long since the blade was made that I can't remember the other) in a random 'chaos' pattern, as would befit "spell-forged steel."

Very sweet! I am also waiting on my Rick Barrett swords (fantasy kat and wak) . Rick, if you are reading this ...GO BACK TO WORK!!!! Ha ha Anyway I know you will love this sword because he and I talked about it many times and I own his phantom leafblade already. He is an awesome maker and a heck of a nice guy to boot. Congratulations!

That is so so so so nice looking!
Is that a reverse fuller?
Looking closer it looks like a double that fades into one...
Am I right?

Triple, actually. The lighting effect is giving a weird perspective of the blade. This is the unmounted blade:

Maybe they should rename the Blacksmith of the gods from Vulcan to Rick!
B-e-a-utiful! looks similar to a design i have, it's on the forum here somewhere.

I think Rick was planning on making a few more (of the blade, at the very least). I'm not terribly insistent on having the ONLY ONE, so I don't care much, as long as United Cutlery doesn't start making them.
Best way to find out? Ask him! I'm sure Rick would love the business!
BTW - for fans of the series, Rick's twisted, mad-genius mind is already churning out plans for "Ice."

Very, very cool . I think everyone has already said it, but that one spell-binding piece of steel. The books seem interesting as well. I'm a Robert Jordan fan, and I noticed he was quoted on the back cover of one of the paper backs. Is this series comparable in any way?

And furtively Time looked him in the face and edged towards him fingering with his dripping fingers the hilt of his nimble sword.

Nathan:
It wipes the floor with it. If you've read and enjoyed Tolkien or Jordan, prepare yourself for the ride of your life. Do not hestitate -- go out RIGHT NOW and pick up these books. They start with "A GAME OF THRONES..."
Enjoy. You'll thank me after a few sleepless nights and "sick days" from work as you butcher yourself with papercuts tearing through the manuscript.

Great! I've been laboring through a few other novels, and I'm really looking for a good series that will hold my attention. Plus my wife can buy me the sequels for Christmas .

Hi Nathan,
No, Martin's books aren't really comparable to Jordan's. They blow them away! The early Wheel of Time books can hold a candle to A Song of Ice and Fire, say about up to book five, but the later ones sink the series. Of course, Martin has written only three books, so we'll see if his series goes the same direction. I really hope not.
