Furry Oriental Bows - 08-27-2006, 09:33 PM

I was in the antiques markets in Beijing and Shanghai a bit ago, and saw a many examples of bows covered in fur (see picture below, taken in Beijing).

I'm curious about the purpose of the fur. Decoration? Protection? Stops chafing when it's slung somewhere?

Anyone know?

Useful for silencing string slaps against the stock when shot, and also, depending on how it's cured, can be a significant strengthening agent for the bow.

Best,

Darryl

Thanks. I never would have thought of either of those reaons, probably because I've never had anything to do with a serious bow.

They look like wallhangings, BLOs.
The proportions, profiles are not very effective looking.
The strings are completely bogus.
The castings as well as the other limb tips are too heavy.
they are on ebay for less than 1 pound

Have you handled one?
What makes the strings bogus?

What makes the strings bogus?

Rare & old for GBP 0.99? Now I'm glad the only things I got were some photons in a picture. I wouldn't have minded having one for the eBay price -- they are pretty cool looking & decorative -- but not knowing that price I'm sure I would have paid lots more. Thanks for posting that URL.

Hah. One of those. I'm still glad I just captured photons. They're a whole lot cheaper to ship.
