My hypothetical proto-schiavona design - 08-06-2002, 05:58 PM

What do you worthies think? Do-able? Worth doing?

Blade style suggestions? I was thinking of sticking to a double edged broadsword blade a la the del tin schiavonesca...

All of your expert opinions are solicited.

Thanks,

Gene

Looks nice... with a blade that narrow at the base, though, I'd go with a one-sided blade with a beefier spine.

Kevin,

Thanks for the kind words.

Actually that's not the plan for the blade, just schmutz from my sketching blade shapes and the grid of the engineering paper I was using. The blade width isn't set in stone (just graphite). The scan is really intended to show just the basket. I was thinking of a backsword style blade at first, sort of a grosse messer/ swiss saber meets schiavona. I originally had the pommel canted slightly like some of the sabers I've read about.

ATrim's Backsword blade on Blacksmith Bros (or something remarkably close to it) is what I'm looking at for a Schianova, the primary reason why I wish I was out of school (textbook-buying season begins in 20 days for me... whoopdie-freakin-doo). It's light, maneuverable, and practical. The Blacksmith Bros seemed to like it a lot when it came out...

I really like the idea of a backsword blade, but the initial concept I had was of a 15th century schiavonesca style broadsword rehilted to a more early-mid 16th century german/swiss style pre schiavona semi-basket hilt. It would look pretty hot with a saber-like blade in it. I suppose i could have TWO made, 'cause money grows on trees and all...
